Getting Here

Maratua is remote, and for most guests that is part of the point. For visitors travelling in from outside Berau, we coordinate the transfer in advance, so once you land, the rest is arranged. Local guests who already know the route to Maratua are of course welcome to make their own way and simply check in on arrival.

Getting to Maratua

1

Fly into Indonesia

The most common entry points are Jakarta, Surabaya, or Balikpapan. From Singapore, Scoot flies direct to Balikpapan. From Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia flies direct to Balikpapan.

2

Connect to Berau

Batik Air operates flights to Berau (BEJ) from Jakarta and Surabaya. From Balikpapan, connect onward to Berau.

3

Transfer to the jetty

Our team will meet you at Berau Airport. The drive to the river jetty takes approximately 20 minutes. This transfer, along with the return leg, is included in every package.

4

Boat to Maratua

For groups of fewer than four, the crossing is on the regular boat that plies the route between Berau and Maratua daily, essentially public transport shared with local passengers. Groups of four or more travel instead on Borneo Cottage Maratua’s own boat, which we arrange directly. Either way, the journey takes approximately 3 hours: around 1.5 hours along the river, then 1.5 hours across open water to the island, arriving at the jetty in Teluk Harapan village, a short walk from the homestay.

Arrive in Berau by 9:00 a.m.

For groups of fewer than four on the regular boat, this is public transport rather than a private charter, usually departing Berau by around 10:00 a.m. but weather and tide dependent, and it can run later. If you arrive in Berau after 9:00 a.m., you may need to overnight in Berau and continue to the homestay the following morning. Please plan your flights accordingly, and check with us if you expect to arrive later.

Groups of four or more travel on Borneo Cottage Maratua’s own boat instead, and we confirm your transfer time directly when arranging the booking.

Leaving Maratua

The return boat departs Maratua in the morning, usually around 10:00 a.m. As with the outbound crossing, the journey takes approximately 3 hours: around 1.5 hours at sea, then 1.5 hours along the river, putting you back in Berau at around 1:00 p.m., before the drive to the airport.

Groups of four or more return on Borneo Cottage Maratua’s own boat instead, and we confirm the timing with you directly.

Depart Berau after 3:15 p.m.

If you’re following the regular boat, it is public transport with a schedule that is weather and tide dependent, so book a flight departing after 3:15 p.m. to allow a margin for delays. If your flight departs earlier than that, we recommend staying overnight in Berau and flying out the following morning, or booking the last flight of the day instead.

We can assist with accommodation recommendations in Berau on request.

Comprehensive travel insurance is worth having, in case of delays.
