How It Started

Built for the Village

The homestay was built for local Indonesian travellers passing through Maratua, and much of its business is still local. Seven rooms, straightforward and affordable, on a street a short walk from the village jetty.

Who Stays Here Now

A Second Kind of Guest

In recent years, divers, snorkellers, and other visitors from further afield have started booking rooms here too. What draws them is the price and the location rather than any resort amenities the homestay was never built to provide.

This site is written with that visitor in mind: someone flying in from outside Berau who wants a comfortable, uncomplicated base in the village itself, with diving arranged next door. Local guests, who typically already know their way to Maratua, remain just as welcome and can book directly.

Location

In the Middle of Teluk Harapan

The homestay sits on a street running behind Teluk Harapan’s main beach. Small shops, restaurants, a food street, and cafes line the other side of the road. Most of what a guest needs is within a five or ten minute walk, with no vehicle required once you’ve arrived.

Sister Properties

Shared Ownership, Different Preferences

Borneo Homestay Maratua shares ownership with two other properties on the island. Borneo Cottage Maratua is five minutes’ walk away and supplies the boats, tanks, and divemasters for every diving package booked through the homestay, since the homestay has no dive centre of its own. Maratua Dive Resort sits about eight kilometres up the coast, deliberately away from the village, facing open water above its own house reef.

The three properties suit different preferences. This one for guests who want to be in the middle of village life. Borneo Cottage Maratua for a small resort feel with the same easy access to town. Maratua Dive Resort for guests who would rather be away from it all.
